A Handful of Sand: Wrestling with Narrative Structure in the Photobook

In this two-day workshop, Ron Jude will cover a range of topics, from the nuts-and-bolts of book publishing, to establishing a basic structure for one’s photobook.

Participants should come to the workshop with finished or nearly-finished photographic projects that they would like to develop into a book. They should bring small (4 x 6-inch or 8 x 10-inch) work prints of every image they would like to consider for inclusion in their books. Ideally, they will also bring hi-res files for each of the images. The emphasis of the workshop will be on editing, sequencing, and basic design development. The participants will not be producing physical dummies, nor will any instruction in “book-making” take place.

Day One
Ron will spend a portion of the first day of the workshop breaking down the workflow and structure of his books Alpine Star, Emmett, and Lick Creek Line. He will also discuss the importance of context and sequencing, and how to ‘let go’ of one’s favorite images in the editing process. He will spend a block of time discussing the logistics of offset book publishing, as well as discussing multiple tracks for getting one’s book published. This portion of the discussion will cover everything from seeking a publisher, to file preparation, to writing press copy. He will have a stack of books on-hand as examples of some of the things discussed, and the workshop students are encouraged to bring a book or two with which they feel a kinship. From there, the workshop will focus on the participant’s book ideas.

Day Two
The second day will be spent exclusively looking at the participant’s work. Ron will provide feedback and assistance on creating a basic structure for their books. This will be done primarily one-on-one, but will also include some group feedback. Editing will be done primarily with hard-copy prints, but some basic InDesign instruction will also take place. (Participants do not need to provide their own computers or software.)
